Temple History

For over fifty years Temple Emanu-El has provided a spiritual home to Reform Jews in the greater Sarasota area. In 1961 the Congregation purchased 4.6 acres on McIntosh Road and began construction on the facility that has served generations. In the years since we have added a building that houses both our Religious School and the Temple Emanu-El Early Learning Center, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

A work in progress, the Congregation raised funds for the addition of a new library and foyer in 2000, and is now engaged in an extensive long-range planning stage that will largely determine what direction we take with the facility in the 21st century.

We are blessed with an area bustling with both Jewish and secular activity. Sarasota has been named “Best Small City in America” by Money magazine and “the nation’s per-capita arts capital” by Southern Living magazine. Employment and volunteer opportunities abound, as we are one of the state’s fasted- growing areas.

Due to our wonderful climate and terrific attractions, Sarasota has for many years been a favorite stomping ground for northern visitors, affectionately known as “snow birds”. Jews among this group inevitably seek a spiritual home away from home, and to these people we open our door.  This ultimately leads to new associate and permanent members, as many find themselves calling Sarasota home after a few visits.

We excited to welcome our new rabbi, Brenner Glickman, to our congregation.  We have already experienced a new vitality of programming and spirituality, and we look forward to a bright future.  Together we will build upon our past, recognize the import of today and set the tone for future generations of Emanu-El.
